A CMI EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
The Civil Engineering Department actively promotes student participation in professional bodies to strengthen academic learning with real-world exposure. The department hosts three student chapters: the Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI], the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), and the Builders' Association of India (BAI). These chapters provide platforms for students to engage in expert lectures, workshops, seminars, technical training, and industry interactions. Through such initiatives, students gain deeper insights into professional practices, enhance their technical competence, and build networks with practicing engineers and industry leaders.
1. IEI student Chapter
The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] Students Chapter Civil (688004/CCET/CV) is committed to providing its members with diverse educational and networking opportunities that enrich their academic journey and professional growth. The chapter regularly organizes student competitions, offering a platform for participants to demonstrate their technical skills, apply core concepts of civil engineering, and engage with industry professionals. These events not only enhance practical understanding but also create valuable opportunities for networking and career development.
In addition to competitions, the chapter conducts workshops designed to deliver hands-on training and practical insights into various aspects of civil engineering. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, these workshops enable students to strengthen their knowledge and skill set. The chapter also observes important occasions such as Engineer's Day and World Water Day, which allow students to reflect on the role of engineers in shaping society and addressing global challenges. Through such initiatives, the IEI Students Chapter fosters a vibrant and dynamic learning community that brings together students, professionals, and industry leaders.
The IEI Students Chapter Civil was formally inaugurated on 15 November 2018 by K K Gopalakrishnan Nair FIE, Chairman, IEI, Kerala State Centre in the presence of students and faculty members. Executive Committee members were formed comprising student representatives and faculty advisors, to oversee and manage the activities of IEI Student chapter in the Civil Department. With its strong leadership, committed membership, and wide-ranging activities, the IEI Students Chapter continues to inspire excellence, foster collaboration, and prepare students to succeed in a rapidly evolving engineering landscape.
2. IGS CCET student Chapter
The Civil Engineering Department of Carmel College of Engineering & Technology is proud to establish a Student Chapter of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) with the aim of nurturing interest in geotechnical engineering among students and bridging the gap between academic learning and field practice. The chapter is committed to promoting knowledge in soil mechanics, foundation engineering, ground improvement techniques, and related geotechnical fields, while facilitating interaction between students, academia, and industry through seminars, workshops, and expert lectures. It also provides students with opportunities for field visits and site inspections, enabling firsthand exposure to geotechnical investigations and construction practices.
Through research activities, paper presentations, and participation in IGS-organized technical events, students are encouraged to broaden their learning and professional engagement. The chapter's activities include technical talks by leading geotechnical engineers, hands-on workshops and laboratory sessions, field trips to construction and testing sites, and seminars highlighting case studies and recent advances in the field. Functioning under the guidance of faculty advisors with expertise in geotechnical engineering, the chapter is led by student office-bearers who take responsibility for planning and executing the annual program, with membership open to all Civil Engineering students. By being part of the IGS Student Chapter, students not only develop technical competence but also enhance their leadership, communication, and organizational skills, while building valuable connections with industry professionals and fostering enthusiasm for research, innovation, and career development in geotechnical engineering.
The IGS Student Chapter was formally inaugurated on August 6, 2025, by Dr. Anil Joseph, Hon. National President, IGS and Dr. Jimmy Thomas, Vice Chairman of the IGS Kochi Chapter, in the presence of enthusiastic student members of CCET, marking the beginning of their journey in the field of geotechnical engineering.
3. BAI Student chapter
Builders' Association of India (BAI) was formed in 1941 in Pune under
the guidance of Brigadier Jackson. Ever since its inception, BAI
movement has grown to more than 200 Centres spread over the length and
breadth of the Country, with its headquarters at Mumbai. With a direct
membership of more than 15,000 Builders, Contractors, Traders,
Consultants and Industrialists, BAI by virtue of its size is the only
true spokesman for the Construction Industry in India. BAI has 16
centres in Kerala State.
The student chapter was inaugurated
on24th September 2025 by the
State Chairman BAI Mr Johnson T A in the presence of
Alleppey Centre Secretary Mr Sharath Snehajan and
other BAI members.
