ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Civil Engineering started functioning in 2014, from the inception of the Institute. The department offers a B.Tech in Civil Engineering programme with an annual intake of 60 students. The first batch of students, affiliated to Kerala University, graduated from this Institute in 2018. In 2015, the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University came into existence, and subsequent batches have been affiliated to the new University. Qualified faculty members, having specialization in various fields of Civil Engineering, handle the various courses and mould competent and morally responsible civil engineers.

The Department of Civil Engineering is always at the forefront in providing technical support and service to the public in various fields - structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering. The department has full-fledged laboratories with skilled technicians. The Consultancy Wing of the department carries out consultancy works following standards, and our clients include government departments, quasi-government organizations, and private parties.

With a focus on developing strong industry relationships, the Civil Engineering department has signed several MoUs with leading organizations in the field. These include Builders Association of India and Keywords Technologies. These partnerships provide opportunities for our students to gain practical experience through internships, participate in joint projects, and attend workshops and training programs to further their education. Our MoUs with these industry partners allow us to stay at the forefront of innovation in the field of Civil Engineering and provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers.

The department offers a four-year B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering. The programme improves the core competencies of a student in Infrastructural Engineering, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Project Management. Different courses, as prescribed by the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, cater to fulfilling these competencies.

The Structural Engineering module covers concrete technology, design of concrete structures, structural analysis, and design of steel structures. The Infrastructural Engineering module consists of planning and designing of roads, railways, ports, and airports. The programme also includes hydrology and water resources engineering, and the design of large irrigation and hydraulic structures. Topics related to Environmental Engineering water, wastewater, its planning, design, and management - are covered and practiced during this course. All Civil Engineering Project Management standards and practices are also dealt with in various courses.

All the activities of the department are guided by its vision and mission statements. As a result, the competency of a student graduating from the department is far more than that set by the University. The department makes systematic assessments of the gaps in the University course curriculum and makes active interventions. Students are offered custom-tailored courses to fill these gaps
